21st Century Leaders Celebrates 35-Year Partnership with Cox Enterprises

(Atlanta, GA) – For 35 years and counting, Cox Enterprises has been supporting and partnering with 21st Century Leaders (21CL) to invest in youth leadership across the state of Georgia. In three and a half decades, this legacy partnership has served over 20,000 of Georgia’s high school students with workforce readiness, career exploration, and leadership development opportunities through employee-led training, workshops, curriculum, and school-based STEM clubs.

In 1989, a cohort of business leaders established 21st Century Leaders (known as the Georgia Business Forum until 1996) in response to an identified need in the workforce: to prepare diverse, young talent to take on leadership roles in the workplace. Over the years, 21st Century Leaders has solidified its reputation as Georgia’s premier youth leadership development organization. Through collaborations with corporate partners like Cox, high school students of all backgrounds and communities have access to high-level leaders, value-driven training, and insight into talent development trends and foreplanning that position them to succeed in their various career pathways.

“21st Century Leaders is celebrating 35 years of inspiring and empowering Georgia’s future STEAM leaders, and Cox is proud to be a part of this milestone. We are thrilled to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world,” says Maury Wolfe, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility and Social Impact, Cox Enterprises. “Through 21CL, we are advancing our mission to empower 34 million people by 2034. Together, we are shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for Georgia’s youth.”

In 21CL’s early years, Cox employees helped develop the leadership training curriculum that continues to be relevant today for young leaders preparing to enter the workforce. Today, Cox supports 21CL in a variety of capacities and initiatives while committing to year-round employee engagement. Cox’s 21CL board position is currently held by Michael White, Assistant Vice President, Human Resources Business Partner, who serves as the Board Effectiveness Committee Chair. Now, over 60 Cox employees engage in volunteer opportunities with 21CL each year to invest in youth leadership, STEM education, and talent development.

Cox has been a consistent collaborator at 21CL’s Summer Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI), providing opportunities for students to learn from employees in panels, workshops, and networking groups, and more recently hosting 80 students at Manheim Atlanta (a Cox Automotive business) to learn about careers, leadership, AI and robotics in the automotive industry. Through a resource ecosystem between 21CL, Cox Enterprises, and Science ATL developed in 2021, Cox supports 21CL’s school-based STEM+21CLubs, which give high school students the opportunities to serve their community and provide career exploration and leadership development for their peers, through a STEM-focused lens. Cox will support 10 STEM + 21CLubs, impacting over 200 students directly, in the 2025-2026 school year.

“Cox Enterprises has been a pillar of support and innovation in our mission for over 35 years,” says Kate Hewitt, Executive Director at 21st Century Leaders. “Their long-standing commitment to empower and invest in Georgia’s youth through leadership development, STEM education, and career exploration has helped shape the futures of thousands of students across the state. We’re proud of our partnership that exemplifies what it means to invest in the next generation of leaders.”

Additionally, Cox hosted 21CL’s Youth Ambassadors at their Ponce City Market offices for their meeting in December 2024. While there, students toured the space and learned about Cox’s goal to positively impact 34 million people by 2034. Over 22,000 students and alumni of 21st Century Leaders can be counted in that goal.

As 21st Century Leaders marked their 35th anniversary in 2024, Cox Enterprises continues to support the organization as a legacy partner, intersecting leadership, technology and inclusion through investment in the Summer Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI) and STEM+21CLubs, as an employer of 21Cl alumni, and as a gold sponsor for 21CL’s annual fundraising gala, Be the Inspiration Gala, which took place on March 15, 2025 at Zoo Atlanta.

21st Century Leaders Celebrates 35-Year Partnership with Georgia Power

(Atlanta, GA) – For 35 years, Georgia Power has been investing in youth leadership development for communities across Georgia by supporting and partnering with 21st Century Leaders (21CL) to inspire youth to lead. In three and a half decades, this legacy partnership has served over 20,000 of Georgia’s high school students with workforce readiness and leadership development, including volunteer opportunities, paid internships, diversity, equity and inclusion training, and careers for 21CL alumni.

21st Century Leaders was established in 1989 as the Georgia Business Forum by a community of business leaders with the purpose of meeting a noticed need in the workforce: to prepare diverse, young talent to take on leadership roles in the workplace. In 1996, the organization changed its name to 21st Century Leaders (21CL), a result of the strategic planning and branding vision of John Varner who served as 21CL’s Board Chair and a Georgia Power executive in the early 90’s. Today, 21st Century Leaders is known as Georgia’s premier youth leadership development organization.

As a partner from the beginning, Georgia Power’s commitment to business education partnerships strengthened the foundation of 21st Century Leaders with educators, community-based organizations, and other youth-focused organizations. In 35 years, much to the credit of partners like Georgia Power and their community-serving initiatives, 21CL has served students in 95% of Georgia’s counties, enabling equitable access to high quality leadership development programs for students with passion and potential in communities large and small.

“Georgia Power has been at the forefront of serving its community and investing in our youth and future workforce, so it’s no surprise that they’ve remained committed to 21st Century Leaders for the last 35 years,” says Kate Hewitt, Executive Director, 21st Century Leaders. “It’s an incredible testament to their values and to the power of investing in young people. We’re proud and grateful for their partnership and the collective impact we’re making together for the next generation of leaders right here in Georgia.”

“At Georgia Power, our commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders is unwavering. For 35 years, our partnership with 21st Century Leaders has embodied Our Values of Intentional Inclusion and Superior Performance, driving our mission to empower Georgia’s youth,” says Rachel Williams, Vice President of Transmission Field Operations, Georgia Power, 21CL Board of Directors. “By investing in their potential, we are not only shaping the future of our workforce but also enriching the communities we proudly serve. Together, we are creating a legacy of leadership, innovation and opportunity that will resonate for generations to come.”

Over the years, Board Members and community affairs champions from Georgia Power have been instrumental in developing the organization through opportunity, innovation, and collaboration. In 1991, 21CL launched its first “summer business academy” which provided business education and diversity training for Georgia’s high school students. When Ellen Lindemann, former Senior Vice President with Georgia Power, joined the 21CL Board of Directors in the 2000’s, she was instrumental in establishing EarthCare: The Leadership Challenge for the 21st Century in 2008.

EarthCare is 21CL’s one-week residential summer leadership institute focused around STEM and environmental stewardship, supported by Georgia Power and the Georgia Power Foundation, which connects students with over 70 Georgia Power employees who volunteer during the program week. Thanks to this partnership, over 1,400 high school students have attended EarthCare at no cost over the past 17 summers.

Additionally, Georgia Power has supported access to youth leadership through support of all of our year-round programming, including free enrollment into our Leadership Connect program, school-year training events, honoring Georgia Youth Leadership Awardees with scholarships, and placing graduating high school students in paid summer internships within their community partners through 21CL’s job shadowing and internship programs. 21CL alumni have even found employment with Georgia Power, following career exploration through our programs into a workforce talent pipeline for Georgia’s top companies.

Maria Flores Blackburn speaks to an audience when attending EarthCare 2009 as a high school student.

“Attending EarthCare in the summer of 2009 was a transformative experience for me. Thanks to the unwavering support from Georgia Power, I was able to participate in this incredible weeklong camp through 21st Century Leaders,” said Maria Flores Blackburn, Project Controls Supervisor, Transmission, Georgia Power, 21CL Alumni and 21CL Board of Directors. “The skills and confidence I gained during that time inspired me to take on leadership roles in my school and community, shaping my journey through high school, college, and beyond. As a CPA and finance professional, I am proud to now work for Georgia Power in a leadership role, and to serve on the board of 21st Century Leaders as Treasurer. This partnership has truly come full circle, and I am honored to be a part of it. The legacy partnership between Georgia Power and 21st Century Leaders has empowered over 20,000 students across Georgia, and I am a testament to the lasting impact of their commitment to youth leadership development.”

As 21st Century Leaders moves forward off their 35th anniversary in 2024, Georgia Power continues to support the organization as a legacy partner, sustaining their partnership for EarthCare each summer, hosting over 300 students for a Summer Orientation at their headquarters in Atlanta, and contributing support for 21CL’s charity golf outing and as a gold sponsor for 21CL’s annual fundraising gala, The Be the Inspiration Gala, taking place on March 15, 2025 at Zoo Atlanta.

How has your career unfolded and how did participating in 21CL help prepare you for your next steps going to college, taking on a new leadership role in community/college and after?

21st Century Leaders transformed my understanding of leadership. The program exposed me to a variety of unique leadership styles and introduced me to many inspiring individuals. It played a pivotal role in allowing me to not only develop the leaders around me but also the leader within me.

What’s your memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL?

I cherish all my memories with everyone in 21CL, so this is a hard question. One memory I particularly enjoy recalling is when I met my now good friend and business partner, Jalen Polk, for the first time. Even though we had never met before, we ended up talking throughout the night and into the morning, until Mr. T came knocking on the door. My first night at 21CL was actually a sleepless one, haha.

Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? If so, how?

Absolutely. 21CL transformed the way I viewed leadership. During the Summer Youth Leadership Institute (SYLI), there was a seminar where we brainstormed the creation of restaurants with one rule: to build on top of an idea rather than break it down. Every group’s restaurant was unique and extraordinary in its own way—some were underwater, some were in the air, and some were even in space. This exercise demonstrated the beauty of working together and that leadership acts as a catalyst to bring things to life that have not yet been born.

Why do you believe programs like 21CL are important? And what advice would you give to a current or future student?

I believe programs like 21st Century Leaders are important because they give students the opportunity to explore and cultivate their own version of leadership.  My advice to a current or future student would be to grow acquainted with uncertainty and failure. Uncertainty is what gives life its beauty, and failure is what gives success its meaning. Fall forward and fall fast, because you will never meet a strong person with an easy past.

The 21st Century Leaders program has been the cornerstone of my American journey since my arrival from Jordan, providing me with invaluable insights into the complexities of the American educational system and the requirements of the intricate college application process. Beyond mere preparation, 21CL has shaped my personal and professional identity, seamlessly integrating academic excellence with a comprehensive understanding of leadership principles and fostering a profound sense of self-awareness. This transformative experience has not only demystified the college application process but has also equipped me with the crucial skill of self-advocacy. As I stand at the threshold of my collegiate journey, I carry with me the indelible impact of 21CL, which goes beyond academic preparation to prepare me for a leadership role within both the college and the broader community, laying the foundation for a future marked by meaningful contributions to society.

What’s your memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL? (Particular program, meeting a professional and diverse peer, speaking in public for the first time, etc.)

One of the standout and enlightening moments from my tenure at 21CL was undeniably the transformative experience during the etiquette workshop, which immersed us in the art of proper dining. For someone who just moved to the US at the time, the guidance on the nuances of tableware utilization, the graceful passing of food, and the adept use of nonverbal cues to signify the ongoing or completed nature of one’s meal left a long-lasting impact, one I am often thankful and reminiscent of.

Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? If so, how?

At the time, it would be an overstatement to say I was a leader in any sense. I was knee-deep in figuring out life after moving to the US. As I progressed through the crucible of higher education, the understanding that anyone can be a leader, even of a team of two, became evident, but the true essence lies in leading effectively—a nuanced interplay between knowing when to lead and when to follow. 21CL unknowingly set me up with the knack for being a good team player, teaching me that effective leadership is this dance between leading and following that makes a real impact.

Why do you believe programs like 21CL are important? And what advice would you give to a current or future student?

21CL took a chance on me when I first came to the US. I am an example of what investing in your community looks like: a former Iraqi refugee who fled the war has made it to college, and now medical school. Working hard alone would not have helped me come this far. I was lucky, but I have since learned the subtle art of getting lucky.

“Getting lucky” is not about random chances. Rather, it is about looking for and creating opportunities, about being able to find the silver linings even in the middle of the darkest clouds, and to insist on being seen, despite, and in spite, of all I went through as a refugee.

How has your career unfolded and how did participating in 21CL help prepare you for your next steps going to college, taking on a new leadership role in community/college and after?

I’ve been fortunate to have careers in various industries, including supply-chain logistics, government, and professional sports.  I’ve led small and large teams as well as budgets of more than $500 million dollars and assets.  Many of my significant accomplishments occurred during my time serving as the ‘Leslie Knope of Atlanta’ aka Atlanta’s Parks & Recreation commissioner.  Under my leadership, we improved operations and delivered many of Atlanta’s most consequential projects: Westside Park, Piedmont Park land expansion, Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center, and Grant Park Gateway.  We retrofitted several playgrounds and pools and served thousands of kids in enrichment activities.  My success as Parks commissioner led me to my current role – where I am responsible for shepherding our government relations at the Atlanta Hawks.

Participating in 21st Century Leaders (21CL) gave me the unique exposure of opportunities I never knew existed.  My summer program at the Atlanta Christian College was the first leadership development program I had participated in, and it was the first time I spent time overnight, away from home.  21CL taught me confidence that my voice and leadership style was valuable, and the program cultivated my speaking skills to gain that seat at the table.  Most importantly, the program allowed me to reflect on what kind of person and leader I wanted to become ‘when I grew up’ and nudged me along that path that has been invaluable today.

What’s your memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL? (Particular program, meeting a professional and diverse peer, speaking in public for the first time, etc.)

I remember learning about proper etiquette and practicing the placement of silverware while dining with other 21CL participants.  While that may have seemed insignificant or even boring at the time, it subtly taught me the importance of presenting yourself and making strong first impressions based on the environment you’re in.

The friendships I gained during my summer camp experience with 21CL were most memorable.  It was the first time I felt I could geek out with others who were from diverse backgrounds yet had similar dreams and goals for themselves and our communities.  These friendships and mentorships inspired me to give back to others and developed my love for service.

Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? If so, how?

During my 21CL experience, I remember journaling – reflecting on the possible careers I wanted to pursue, and brainstorming skills and experiences needed to obtain those opportunities.  While I don’t journal as often I as should now, I constantly reflect on my leadership journey and how I want to continue to contribute and impact my community.

I would describe my leadership style as an observant confidant.  I invest, advise, and support people whom I’ve come to know.  I am often asked to spend time catching up and giving advice to acquaintances, colleagues, and long-time friends.  I always answer the call to help others solve the thing that keeps them up at night.  Through these deep conversations, I challenge them to not be fearful of the leadership challenges that come.  21CL gave me my first experience with building meaningful and lasting relationships.

Why do you believe programs like 21CL are important? And what advice would you give to a current or future student?

21st Century Leaders develops young people as independent, confident adults that will lead industries and our communities forward.

My advice to young leaders today:  Every one of you will go on your own journey.  Find beauty in the journey itself and be kind to yourself along the way.  Visualize your success.  Be bold and curious.  Blow up the system if that’s what it takes!

How has your career unfolded and how did participating in 21CL help prepare you for your next steps going to college, taking on a new leadership role in community/college and after?

21CL helped shape my understanding of leadership at an early age. It’s not just management, people with big titles, or the “face of the brand.”  I learned leaders can play roles at all levels regardless of their role or the size of their sandbox.

I began a career in project management. I didn’t have a dedicated team, but I was in a highly-matrixed organization with high expectations and many competing priorities. In order to be effective in my job I had to lead through influence. I had to tailor my messaging to my audience. I had to apply my etiquette lessons and learn how to present myself in a way that brought respect, but also how to build and maintain relationships with a diverse mix of people.

What’s your memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL? (Particular program, meeting a professional and diverse peer, speaking in public for the first time, etc.)

The 21CL summer camp was an eye-opening experience for me.  As a self-proclaimed introvert and a teenager with limited life experiences, I met a very diverse group of kids that gave me lots of new perspectives and appreciation for different life paths.

I remember a girl in my group sharing that she was going to be the first in her family to finish high school and go to college.  I had taken it for granted that I was expected to go to college, and I remember thinking, “That’s impressive!” Charting new territory and going where no one in her family had gone before seemed adventurous, but she was brave and confident.

Another highlight was after camp when I met a camp teammate up in north Georgia to go hiking.  He was from the mountains, and I lived in Atlanta.  Towards the end of the hike, he was laughing as he realized the things my city ears were not tuned to hear or recognize.  He started to point things out and tell me what I was hearing.  We have so much to learn from one another!

Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? If so, how?

One thing 21CL taught me and I hope I practice regularly is to be a good listener. Good leadership does not resemble a dictatorship. A leader should never lose touch with the people they want to lead or represent, so it is important to hear their thoughts, concerns, suggestions, and give that insight thoughtful consideration.

Why do you believe programs like 21CL are important? And what advice would you give to a current or future student?

I think programs like 21CL are important because they help provide tools and perspectives that most people don’t get elsewhere, or don’t get until they are in the work world.  But to get opportunities, it’s helpful to know how to interact with adults, how to conduct oneself in a business setting, how to present ideas so that the audience is both engaged and understanding the message.  Having access to practice these skills with real business professionals is more meaningful and impactful than role-playing with your peers, and more positive and empowering than learning through trial and error or worse yet failure.

21st Century Leaders Celebrates 35-Year Partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery

(Atlanta, GA) For 35 years, Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), formerly Turner, has been supporting and partnering with 21st Century Leaders (21CL) to inspire youth to lead. In three decades, this legacy partnership has served over 17,000 of Georgia’s high school students with career and leadership training, including volunteer opportunities, paid internships, a student-led social enterprise business developed by students and Cartoon Network managers, and even employment for industry-inspired 21CL alumni!

21st Century Leaders began in 1989 as the Georgia Business Forum, changing names in 1996 to 21st Century Leaders (21CL). The organization launched its first “summer business academy” in 1991, focusing on business education and diversity training for Georgia’s high school students to prepare for leadership roles in the workforce and in their communities. Since its beginning, 21CL has partnered with companies to provide equitable opportunities for youth to access professionals, career knowledge, resources for service and leadership, and confidence for their future pathways.

It was the early 1990’s when a community affairs executive at Turner Broadcasting System (TBS), Terri Tingle, solidified the collaborative relationship between 21CL and the Atlanta-based media company, establishing a legacy of support that continues today through sponsorship, program development, employee engagement and Board membership.

Then, it was Dennis Quinn, Executive Vice President at Turner at the time, and 21CL’s Board Chair in the early 2000’s, whose forward-thinking passion for leadership drove the creation of 21CL’s first co-branded summer leadership institute in 2006 called Leadership Unplugged: A CNN Experience. That became a pivotal turning point for the organization. Bob Watson, Founding Executive Director of 21st Century Leaders says, “He is a really great example of what committed leadership could do.”

Warner Bros. Discovery had been sponsoring corporate exploration days and year round programming including, for several years, the Cartoon Network Closet, a unique work experience for high school students. This student-run social enterprise gave high school students a paid or credited work experience running a storefront on eBay selling branded items donated by the network to support 21st Century Leaders, as well as the opportunity to work with network managers and executives on collaborative special projects. Dennis Adamovich, who currently serves on 21CL’s Advisory Council, led this Initiative when he was SVP of Marketing for Cartoon Network during the early 2000s, proving once again that committed leadership drives impact. Building on years of support and collaboration, WBD’s sponsorship of a week-long program introduced a new level of impact and sustainability to the partnership.

For 18 summers from 2006 to 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery’s support of this media-focused summer program allowed nearly 1,800 high school students to participate at no cost in a curated, premier residential program and gain invaluable insights and access into the media and entertainment industry that continues to expand in Georgia. The name of the institute changed over the years as the company evolved, but their commitment to investing in future talent and youth leadership stayed consistent and even grew with the inclusion of a paid summer internship exclusively available to high school senior students from WBD’s organizational partners (like 21CL).

“Warner Bros. Discovery is proud of our longstanding partnership with 21st Century Leaders, and we celebrate their achievements over these last 35 years. Throughout our partnership, we have been fortunate to work with the incredible 21CL team to co-create engaging in-depth student programs focused on building career pathways in the media and entertainment industry. I am proud to have witnessed first-hand the impact of the work, seeing so many 21CL students pursuing careers in the media industry and even joining our company as interns and full-time employees. We look forward to elevating our reach this year and remaining a source of mentorship and inspiration for the future leaders of our industry,” says Sydney Langdon, Senior Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at WBD.

“Warner Bros. Discovery’s commitment has never waivered for three decades. Not many nonprofits can say that about their partners. To me, that only shows their committed and passionate leadership, shared values, and strong belief in the work 21st Century Leaders has done and continues to do for Georgia’s youth,” says Kate Hewitt, Executive Director for 21st Century Leaders. “Our collective investment in inspiring and developing diverse storytellers and leaders has left, and continues to leave, an indelible mark on Georgia’s communities and beyond.”

As we celebrate our 35th anniversary in 2024, Warner Bros. Discovery continues to support 21CL as a legacy partner. While in high school, Cam participated in one of 21st Century Leaders’ Summer Leadership Institutes, the media- and technology-focused program sponsored by Warner Bros. Discovery (formerly Turner) known at the time as Leadership Plugged-In. In this post he shares how that training helped him throughout his high school years and after.

“Outside of sports, this was the first time I had to engage with peers for a desired outcome. As someone who “likes to do it all” this experience gave me insight on how to rely on and trust in my team.” – Camaran Henson

Paint a brief picture of yourself and what you are doing now.

After graduating high school, I attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. While there I earned my Bachelor of Science in Economics. Following graduation, I was commissioned into the navy as a Naval Officer. I had the opportunity to serve in the Navy for an additional 6 years and led teams of 30-300 personnel. I have now transitioned out of the naval service and work as a Vice President, Global Program Manager at Citi. In this role I serve as an internal consultant to Citi’s transformation goals.

When were you in high school and which 21CL programs did you participate in?

While in high school in 2010, I participated in a 21CL summer camp program known as Leadership Plugged-In at Georgia Institute of Technology.

How has your career unfolded and how did participating in 21CL help prepare you for your next steps going to college, taking on a new leadership role in community/college and after?

21CL was my first exposure to networking with peers outside of the classroom. It gave me the opportunity to work with individuals with different backgrounds at an early age in my life and the networking and interpersonal skills I learned guided me through my time at the Naval Academy and beyond!

What’s your memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL? (Particular program, meeting a professional and diverse peer, speaking in public for the first time, etc.)

While at the 21CL camp I had to work with a group to do a presentation. Outside of sports, this was the first time I had to engage with peers for a desired outcome. As someone who “likes to do it all” this experience gave me insight on how to rely on and trust in my team.

Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? if so, how? And if you’ve recently learned something else about leadership please share!

Recently I have learned that leadership is to try and look at situations from another person’s perspective.

What advice would you give to a current or future student?

Be comfortable with being uncomfortable. Take on challenges and utilize this time in your life to work out the “kinks.” Step outside of your comfort and challenge yourself in the areas that you think you need to develop.

How would you describe 21CL in three words?

Insightful, Engaging and FUN!

Alumni Spotlight: Ashley Carter https://www.21stcenturyleaders.org/alumni-spotlight-ashley-carter/ Thu, 01 Sep 2022 22:31:54 +0000 https://staging.21stcenturyleaders.org/alumni-spotlight-ashley-carter/ 21CL Alumna Ashley Carter is a graduate of Midtown High School (2016), of University Of Georgia (2020) and headed back to University of Georgia for her PMBA, She currently works as a Software Instructor for Blackbaud and has previously worked as a multimedia journalist in Atlanta, Georgia. Ashley enjoys volunteering and uplifting others and believes that growth and learning never end.  “When I was at a low point in my life during high school, I remember joining the 21CLUB at my school. We gave back to the community, got to hear from different speakers, gaining life lessons at each meeting and grew as leaders. Eventually I joined the 21CLub’s leadership because I felt better overall while uplifting others.” – Ashley Carter

Paint a brief picture of what you are doing now.

I am a software instructor for a technology company called Blackbaud. I train hundreds of accountants each month, from non-profits around the world, how to navigate and use Blackbaud’s software solution, Financial Edge NXT. I previously worked in television news in Atlanta and Myrtle Beach. The skills I utilized in the news business have been essential to me striving and growing in my role.

Which programs did you participate in? How did the skills/tools/perspectives you acquired from 21CL prepare you for your next steps, going into college, taking on new leadership roles in your community, college and after?

The 21st Century Leaders community is unmatched! When I was at a low point in my life during high school, I remember joining the 21CLUB at my school. We gave back to the community, got to hear from different speakers, gaining life lessons at each meeting, and grew as leaders. Eventually I joined the 21CLub’s leadership because I felt better overall while uplifting others, as I was growing into womanhood. Those strong values of service have been instilled in me. Ms. Van Atta (the 21CLub Advisor) at Midtown High School played a key role by taking us in as we were and never judged. That made my time in the club so much nicer! I later got to attend one of the 21CL Summer Leadership Institutes, Leadership Unplugged: A CNN Experience, currently known as Future Leaders Institute – an experience I will never forget! That week was so fun and insightful, and it’s a huge reason I went on to study journalism at the University of Georgia! Those skills I gained from that camp are still used up to today even in my current role. On top of all of that, the friends I have made during my 21CL days are still in my life!

Do you have a memorable or ‘aha’ moment during your time at 21CL? (Particular program, meeting a professional and diverse peers, speaking in public for the first time, etc.?)

Something I will never forget about 21st Century Leaders is when I was home one summer, following my senior year of high school and after an internship ended abruptly; I called 21st Century Leaders’ office to see if they had work that I could help with. They immediately created a position for me, and during that summer I got a real world work experience before college! I got to see behind the scenes of how tough their work is to support thousands of high school students, yet the staff does it with such grace. I knew from that point forward, that 21st Century Leaders’ mission was bigger than just programs and meetings… it is truly to make a better tomorrow! I will never forget that!

Did 21CL assist you in developing a leadership style that makes you an effective leader? If so, how? And have you recently learned something else about leadership? Please share!

Overall, in each role I have held, I can adapt and pivot quickly. I also have been commended for taking feedback and promptly applying that to my workflows to make outcomes greater.  Something I have learned through 21st Century Leaders is that it is important to adapt to continue growing. Growth and learning never end. I also know, as I continue to elevate, it is important to reach back to uplift others. Community service continues to be at the center of my life! I am so grateful for that.
